WW Weigh-In #63

I blame my cycle for this week's weigh in result.

Last week: 195.0 lb
This week: 196.0 lb
Total gained this week: 1 lb

But I haven been out running more and it's still kind of ugly but I'm doing it and that's what matters. I've also started doing more weights, which works out well on TV nights. No more lolling on the couch all night!

So with any luck I'll soon start seeing some results on the scale.

WW Weigh-In #59

It's my birthday today! And not only did my age go up; so did the scale.

Last week: 195.2 lb
This week: 196.0 lb
Total gained: 0.8 lb

Really, it was all my fault. My week was filled with a concert (and dinner and beer at a pub); babysitting the nephews (and using this as a good excuse to eat sugar donuts and chips); a night out for my birthday (with more dinner and beer at a pub); a holiday Monday filled with day-after-drinking fried chicken; and then Tuesday spent trying to undo it all.

In all of these situations I could have made better choices but I didn't. And I can't keep using the excuse that I want to be able to still have fun while losing weight because, often, what I like to do for fun is not conducive to weight loss.

So really, it's a matter of focusing on what's important: using fun as an excuse to not be good about my eating or finding a way to have sensible fun and still lose weight.

It would seem that the answer is obvious yet by reading this blog for the past year and a bit, it's much easier said than done.

WW Weigh-In #58

In keeping with the weighing-in-on-time-but-posting-late theme, here we go:

Last week: 194.0 lb
This week: 195.2 lb
Total gained: 1.2 lb

Interestingly enough, I gained back exactly what I had lost the week before. That was partly because of the awesome sibling weekend we had with the Beau's siblings and their spouses. Oh, and bowling is not a physical enough activity to work off an amazing dinner at an Italian restaurant, complete with red wine, and followed by dessert at home that included cookies, orange loaf and chocolate brownies with mint icing. (Seriously, why did it take me this long to think of putting mint icing on brownies? Must try peanut butter next.)

I have been doing my best to be active this week too. Wednesday was another big walking day: I spent my day off walking down Runnymede to Bloor (a half hour walk) and then wandered around the bookstore for another hour. Yesterday was a bit harder as we went to see The Tragically Hip; the only activity was some awkward, confined-space dancing but I did do it for almost two hours. Today was more walking and some stretching and exercise band resistance work while watching a movie.

Tomorrow we're off to baby-sit the nephews overnight so some frolicking in the snow will be in order, then we'll see what Sunday brings. Plus it's Family Day weekend so I'm off Monday AND we don't have an issue going out next week so I took Tuesday off too. That means I can get some activity in on those days too!

I'm also going to make a concerted effort to really track my points. I was doing my best when I was banking all my activity points. When I did that, even when I used up all my flex points (and sometimes went into my activity points) I was consistently losing on weeks when I had activity points in the bank. And on those days when it feels like I haven't had nearly enough food to have used up so many points it's nice to see accumulating points mean something good.

There are also some changes coming at work, which I should know more about next week. And these should be good changes too so I'm excited about what's going to be happening and how that will have a positive impact on me.

I also turn 33 next week. Weird.

WW Weigh-In #56

Sigh.

Last week: 192.6 lb
This week: 195.2 lb
Total gained: 2.6 lb

I suck.

WW Weigh-In #52 - Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2013! I hope everyone had a happy, healthy, fun-filled holiday season.

2012 was a great big year for me, what with buying a house and getting engaged, and that awesomeness is going to continue in 2013 since we've got a wedding to plan and a house to continue making a home.

But since it's also Wednesday, it's a weigh-in day for me. Today also marks week 52 of my WW journey - a full year! It would have been amazing to get on the scale this morning and see a nice low number but it was not to be:

Two weeks ago: 189.0 lb
This week: 196.6 lb
Total gained: 7.6 lb

Egad! That was a little more than I expected and, let's face it, a bit of an embarrassment. But - BUT - I know from experience that it's easy to lose those first five pounds simply by eating normally again. And that, combined with more diligent point-tracking, will help me get the excess holiday weight off quickly.

I also need to start exercising again, not just for weight loss but to do away with my back pain and tight muscles. I feel so good when I exercise so it amazes me a bit how lazy I've become with it. My walking plan hasn't panned out yet but that doesn't mean it won't! It really is just a matter of overcoming my own laziness.

And there's lots to share about the wedding and I need to post some pictures of our house and how we've decorated it. It's all so very exciting so here's to a fabulous 2013!

WW Weigh-In #48

I seem to have fallen into a terrible pattern of blogging the day after my weigh-ins. Though as long as I'm weighing in, it's all okay, right?

Last week: 187.8 lb
This week: 189.0 lb
Total gained this week: 1.2 lb

And up again we go. Sigh. I blame it on the tin of Quality Street chocolates I bought. I think I need to ban all chocolate from our house. That said, I've only got to lose 4 lb by month's end to hit my revised year-end target. I'm still hopeful I can do it.

Though in four weeks it will be my 52nd weigh-in; in those four weeks, I'd love to drop 4 lb to mark my one-year weigh-in-versary with a small victory. Yeah, I like the sound of that.

I'm really making an effort to exercise more and to get more vegetables, which I'm sure will help. I will get there!

WW Weigh-In #41

Oh, hi. Sorry this post is two days late; it's been a bit of a hectic week. I also had to work on Wednesday, but I'm off today in lieu, so it all works out. And who doesn't love a three-day weekend?

However, my hectic schedule has wreaked havoc on my eating and exercise habits:

Last week: 188.4 lb
This week: 189.0 lb
Total gained this week: 0.6 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 7.2

I don't enjoy that the scale is slowly creeping upwards and  I like it even less that I'm only a pound away from 190 lb. I still want to hit my weight loss target but I've reassessed (again) my goal for this year.

I would like to be at 185 lb and maintain that weight for a few weeks (or even lose a bit - but at least maintain) by December 31.

Sure, it's not where I was hoping to be, but if I can do that, it will mean I have lost and kept off 17 pounds this year. And that is something to be proud of. I'm also only 4 pounds away from that target, so if I can stick to my walking plan and be wary of what I eat, I'm sure I can do it.

And once I'm there, I can figure out my next plan of attack.

WW Weigh-In #40

So the scale went up a little this week:

Last week: 187.8 lb
This week: 188.4 lb
Total gained this week: 0.6 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 6.6

On the one hand, that's not too bad considering we just had Thanksgiving weekend and I had three (THREE!) huge dinners as well as ample breakfasts, sweets and wine. Going up just over half a pound is not too bad.

On the other hand, though, I'm still not getting to where I need to be. And that is completely my fault and my laziness and I make excuses every week for that and then don't seem to be able to do enough about it.

But I mentioned last week I had a new exercise plan in mind so I figured I'll share it now. I've done it a couple of times and I definitely feel it so now that I've got a straight stretch between now and Christmas, it's the perfect time to get back on a regular workout schedule.

My plan:
Daily: 30-40 minutes of walking, either outside or on a treadmill.
Every other day: three sets of 5 pushups; 10 squats; 20 bicycle sit-ups; and 10 lunges.

I've also been noticing that my breathing is getting better so I'm hoping to start running again and to replace two weekly walks with two weekly runs. But definitely the walking.  Even though I like how my body responds to running, walking is something I can do anywhere, at any time, with nothing more than comfy shoes and proper outdoor gear (if needed). And I keep reading weight loss success stories where walking played a huge part. I guess I dismissed it because it's not as "glamourous" as running, but it's still so good for me and when I ramp it up to 4 mph on the treadmill (and make sure I do that when outside) I feel like it's a good place to pick up exercising again,

And it's a lot harder to make excuses not to do it. After all, I have been walking since I was around a year old.

WW Weigh-In #35

And we go back again:

Last week: 187.2 lb
This week: 189.6 lb
Total gained this week: 2.4 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 7.8 lb

The Beau and I spend the weekend in Killarney, hiking, canoeing and camping, along with two of our closest friends and their beautiful dogs (pictures and a longer post to come).

One of the main things about being backwoods camping for four days is that the food had to be non-perishable and carb-heavy - I think that is a big reason why I gained weight. Also, the lack of vegetables and other fibre sources caused a, well, backlog in the plumbing, if you catch my drift.

But we're back in the city now and we've spent the last two days packing for the first part of our staged move (more on that later as well). Slowly but surely life is returning to normal and soon I'll be back on the right weight loss schedule.

WW Weigh-In #33

It was a bad week.

Last week: 184.0 lb
This week: 188.8 lb
Total lost this week: 4.8 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 7.0 lb

I'm really struggling here. I could blame this on menstrual bloat but it doesn't matter. I'm having a hard time staying on track and getting the weight off and I'm really disappointed in myself.

But all I can do is keep trying.

WW Weigh-In #31

It was what I thought:

Last week: 186.6 lb
This week: 187.2 lb
Total gained this week: 0.6 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 5.4 lb

I know I'm a day late blogging but I did weigh myself yesterday; even when I'm not punctual in reporting my progress, I always make sure I get on the scale on Wednesday morning.

So why am I up this week? Because I've been eating like crap. Because I haven't been exercising. Because I've been stress eating. Why stress eating? House stuff, mainly. Both the Beau and I would like to buy a house and set a closing date and start getting ready to move. It's weighing on us both and it's taking its toll on me. I've also been having a lot of tummy discomfort lately, which may be related to the house stress. I'm still taking Relora, but it may be time to increase to three pills a day.

However, I'm just going to take this in stride and keep trying. I was actually thinking about goals and how I should be focusing on losing a pound this coming week. Just a pound. I mean, it's not that much, right? And I won't worry about the next week or the week after that. Just the upcoming week - and I'll focus on losing a pound.

THAT I can do,

WW Weigh-In #28

Sorry, it's a late post today. I did weigh in this morning but then had a super busy day, so I'm only now getting around to the (bad) news:

Last week: 187.2 lb
This week: 187.8 lb
Total gained this week: 0.6 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 6.0 lb

Eff this.

IT IS ON.

WW Weigh-In #27

Yesterday was not a good day. In fact, this week has not been a good week and it was compounded just a bit when I got on the scale:

Last week: 185.2 lb
This week: 187.2 lb
Total gained this week: 2.0 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 5.4 lb

Honestly, I was taken by surprise. A 2lb gain was much more than I expected and proceeded to deflate me immensely. So I pouted and scowled and stormed around the house for a bit, then put on my best fake smile and went to get my hair cut.

Interestingly enough, that's where my mood broke (and not just because of my fresh new 'do).

While chatting with my stylist, Sergio, we started talking about football (a.k.a soccer), as he's Argentinian and I knew he was into it. While he didn't watch Euro Cup (no Argentina), we started talking about football players and, of course, David Beckham. I then expressed that I don't find Becks attractive; his is not the body type I enjoy. Sergio was surprised to hear this, as he thought all women lusted for the Beckham-bodied type. We then started talking about body shapes and sizes and how men feel pressure to look good (which, honestly, surprised me) and he said that what attracts him most, beyond womanly curves, is sensuality and a woman who projects a confidence and love of herself. This is the first time I've heard first-hand a man say this, without being pointedly asked or without some fishing for compliments. He finished the conversation by saying, "No matter what shape, there someone out there for everyone."

Amen to that.

And, without even realizing it, my mood was slowly buoyed and finally lifted by the end of the conversation. I'm even still feeling better today. I still want to be slimmer, more toned and more fit, but now I feel calmer having heard a man essentially say it's okay to be me as I am. Just own it.

Perhaps I should work on that, along with my squats.

WW Weigh-In #25

And so it goes. And so it goes.

Last week: 185.8 lb
This week: 186.8 lb
Total gained this week: 1.0 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 5.0 lb

Sigh. I've been gaining and losing the same few pounds for about two months now - coincidentally, the same amount of time we've been house hunting. As I mentioned yesterday, stress eating has been a thing but now that I've recognized that I'm hoping to defeat it. Still, it would be so much easier if we could just buy a damn house!

I'm still working at finding a way over this hurdle. The Couch to 5K program will help; I did the first workout yesterday and it was pretty easy which will help me keep going. The running I've done in the past is definitely going to help but it's also nice to start at the beginning of the program and do really well - it's that kind of instant success that will help me keep going.

Also, I'm not going to hit my goal weight by July 4, alas. Losing 5 lb in a week is possible, but it's neither healthy nor sustainable. All I can do is keep working at it.

WW Weigh-In #23

I had some hopes for this past week, that I might be able to lose a pound or so. Turns out 'twas not to be:

Last week: 185.6 lb
This week: 186.8 lb
Total gained this week: 1.2 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 5.0 lb

On the plus side I'm almost done with this stupid cold so I can finally get back to being active. And even with the ups-and-downs I've had over the last little while I've been able to consistently keep off 15 lb, so that's something.

But over the past couple of weeks I've fallen into a trap that has caught me before: I eat rich, heavy foods then don't feel like being physical; the rich foods make me crave more so I eat more; this leads to even less exercise; and so on and so forth. So it's back to good foods and physical activity (I'm eating shredded wheat with strawberries as I write this).

I'd still like to hit my next weight loss target by July 4 - wish me luck!

45 pounds in nine years

Remember those old infomercial ads for the Hair Club for Men? With the guy who would say, "Not only am I the president, but I'm also a client" (or something to that affect)? It always felt so cheesy because the Hair Club for Men just seemed to ridiculous.

Today, I came across another president who also uses the services of the company he heads, but it was much more credible. It's an article in the Globe and Mail about David Kirchhoff, the president and CEO of WW International. He's the one who took nine years to lose 45 pounds and he's written a book about it.

But he also offers up some great advice in the article, which not only makes sense but rings truer than the Hair Club ever did because he's using a program that has been proven to work for millions of people (me included), but he also didn't have instant, immediate and forever-lasting success from the start. It's nice to see that other people struggle and that they're not afraid to talk about it. Among other things, the article has this to say:
The reason why so many people tend to fail when trying to lose weight is they expect a “miraculous and massive achievement” to happen overnight. The truth is, success comes from slogging it out over years, not days or weeks.
Sure, Jennifer Hudson is a great celebrity spokeswoman for WW, but she has more resources at her disposal than I'll ever have so of course her success has been astronomical. That's not the reality for the majority of people and I enjoy seeing how the normal ones make it work.

While I'm hoping it won't take me nine years to lose 45 pounds, suddenly it doesn't seem so bad if it does.

WW Weigh-In #21

Well, it's weigh-in day again, which brings a nice departure from all my focus on buying a house. Here's what the numbers have to say:

Last week: 184.8 lb
This week: 186.0 lb
Total gained ost this week: 1.2 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 4.2 lb

I'll admit, I was a little surprised by this. I didn't have the best week, food-wise, but I was thinking a half-pound loss wouldn't be unreasonable. I'm also realizing I need a new plan of attack, as I find myself stuck in the 80s - and not in a fun, John Hughes kind of way.

I've talked before about my happy weight and that maybe I'm nearing that and that's still possible. But I do believe that I can get down to 181.8 lb and that I should get down to there.

(As a reminder, 181.8 lb marks a loss of 10% of my body weight, based on my weight when I started WW. I really want to hit this target.)

It's often believed that it's easier to gain weight in the winter, due to comfort food and such, and to lose weight in the summer, because apparently people only eat salad. I'm sure this holds true for many, many people but it's actually the opposite for me. I find it easier to lose weight in the winter (Christmastime excluded) because I'm more likely to stay in and cook and make good food; I don't go out drinking as much; and it's not too hot outside to have the oven going all the time. In the summer I'm more likely to have a few beers, hit a patio and eat a burger and, the next morning, feel my few beers and need pizza. I hibernate in the winter but by doing so, I'm less likely to eat bad food.

Perhaps I need to pretend it's still January and eat like it's -20C?

WW Weigh-in #17

Well, it was as I expected:

Last week: 185.6 lb
This week: 187.4 lb
Total gained this week: 1.8 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 5.6 lb

It's a little frustrating when I think how close I was to my next weight loss target and that I've only gained since then - but I'm dedicated and focused on really getting back on track now. I'm going to log my points and make the right choices and get back into the exercising groove, because that's how I want my lifestyle to be. Sure, I've enjoyed what I've eaten over the past two weeks and I've luxuriated a bit in my laziness but I don't like how I look and feel when I do that (and how I feel is more important than how I look) so I'm going to keep working at making the changes to get to a place where I always like how I feel.

I didn't have time for a workout today, mostly because I spent 4 hours cleaning the condo. I scrubbed the fridge so good I don't need no weights! But housework counts for activity points and the place looks great, so it's a double win!

Here's to better results next week!

WW Weigh-In #16

It's weigh-in day! Let's get right to it:

Last week: 185.0 lb
This week: 185.6 lb
Total gained this week: 0.6 lb

Weight loss target: 181.8 lb
To reach target: 3.8 lb

This is the third week in a row I've logged a gain. Three weeks ago, I was at 183.8; now I'm at 185.6. That's only 1.8 pounds, which is incredibly negligible and is partly why I'm not discouraged. But on the flip side, it's small increases like that that landed me in at the weight where I needed WW.

If I wasn't weighing in weekly, I wouldn't notice the weight slowly creeping back on. And I know it's not that much and I know it's easily lost again and I know I'm still making amazing progress. Also, I'm not trying to advocate that gaining a measly half pound is cause for concern or that you should weigh yourself daily to keep yourself in check.

Rather, for me, this is what I need. I need the regular weigh-ins and the points program and a way to see how what I eat and what I do affects what I weigh.

For some people, checking how their clothes fit works. For me, that's good but not great. Yesterday the jeans I was wearing were a bit loose, which is awesome, but at the same time I was putting on weight - and I gain all over so I never notice significant weight gain until I've packed on 10+ pounds and then it's a bigger challenge to get it off.

And despite my gains over the last three weeks, I'm still weighing in at less than I was four weeks ago (when I was 189 lb) so it's all still good!

As a quick note, there will be no weigh-in next week as I'll be on vacation in beautiful Algonquin Park. The Beau and I have rented a cabin and we'll spend the days hiking and enjoying all that spring in Algonquin has to offer, while evenings will be spent grilling delicious food, reading, soaking in the jacuzzi tub and, well, probably little else. 'Twill be heavenly and I have no intention of packing my scale! So in two weeks' time we'll see what a week of hiking does for me!

Losing ground

Guys, I'm not going to lie: I've been slipping.

I'm still tracking my points but I've also been a little cavalier with them, even ignoring them completely for big meals. It's strange but I was doing much better during the winter months; now that it's spring I can't seem to stay on track even though this is the time of year when people really get on track.

I think it's starting to dawn on me the magnitude of the life change I've undertaken. It's easy enough to say that it's better to make slow progress if it means making lifestyle changes but it sure is hard to actually do!

This is also where my impatience kicks in. I've been on WW for not quite 4 months and I've managed to lose and keep off 17 pounds. There is nothing wrong with that! Despite knowing this, though, I want to make more progress - I want to be thinner NOW, dammit! And I find myself falling into that downward spiral; you know, the one that goes, "Since I can't be thin now, why bother trying? That donut looks delicious. But now that I ate that donut, I won't be thin. And since I can't be thin, well, that bacon cheeseburger looks delicious..."

Oh self-defeat, how I thought you were gone!

So I'm a little worried about tomorrow. I really don't want a third week of gaining but I know I only have myself to blame if I do (I had cake twice this past weekend! TWICE! And it was delicious.)

I've been thinking a lot about habits recently and I'm going to do a post on them and the habits I really want to get into. I need to make eating well and exercising so ingrained in my life that I don't even notice when I'm doing it, but I still get to reap the awesome benefits.

I've got ideas of what I can do to help myself, too. I just need to put them into action. I'll share those with you too, later, hopefully after I've acted on them, so you can see what brilliant things I've added to my life!

I can tell you this, though: no matter what, I will not let myself become complacent or defeated or upset over any changes that don't go my way. I'm 32 years old and the eating and exercise habits I have now I've been working on for 32 years. Four months ain't gonna change that!
